Resume of Sylvie Covey (English)
Background
Sylvie G. Covey was born in France and studied graphic
arts at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris (1973-1976).
While traveling around the world, she studied art in Indonesia and Japan,
and moved to New York City in late 1977. She became a US citizen in 1989.
She printed at the Art Students League, where she was a teaching assistant
in printmaking for seven years. (1977-1984).
She also printed on and off at the Blackburn Printmaking
Workshop for over ten years.
In the United States, she has earned a BA from SUNY Empire
State College (1993) and a MFA in Graphics Summa cum Laude from CUNY Hunter
College, New York, (1996).
Work Experience
Since 1980, Sylvie G. Covey is the proprietor of printmaking
studio located in midtown, Manhattan, where she pursues her work in all
media, and currently concentrates on combining digital and photographic
techniques with printmaking.
She has taught printmaking at the Art Students league
of New York since 1995 and at the Art Center of Northern New Jersey since
1998. She was a Master printer at Hunter College (1994-1997) where she
taught photo etching and experiments in Graphics. She also taught printmaking
at Manhattan Graphics Center and at the Newark Museum. She now teaches
digital and photo techniques in Printmaking for the BFA Program at the
Fashion Institute of Technology in New York since 2000.
Exhibitions
Her work is exhibited in numerous galleries and museums
in the United States and abroad. She had solo exhibitions at the Maison
Francaise of Columbia University (1987-1992), and at chashama Gallery
in Times Square, NYC (2003.) In 1999 and 2001 she had solo exhibitions
at Denise Cade Gallery in Manhattan. Her work is included in all the faculty
exhibitions where she teaches. In Europe she exhibited also at Katia Granoff
Gallery in Paris, France (1975), the Salon d'Automne du Grand Palais in
Paris, France (1988), the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubjana, Slovenia (1987-1991),
the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow, Poland (1997-2000, 2001, 2003),
the City Art Gallery in Czestochowa in Poland (1997, 2003), the Graphic
Constellation '97 in Graz, Austria, the Consumentar '98 and 2001 in Nuremberg,
Germany, and the Black print Studio in Dublin, Ireland (2004) among others.
In South America her prints were exhibited in 1999 at the Museo d'Arte
Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and in Asia at the Ino-cho Paper Museum
in Kochi, Japan and at the Museum of Sapporo, Japan. (1999-2000). In the
US her work was included in the Museum of the City of New York (2002).
Collections, grants
Ms Covey is work is included in the New York Public
Library Prints Collection, the Kidder, Peabody & Co. Collection, the
Dean & Witter Collection, the National Museum of Krakow, and the Museum
of the city of New York Collections. She was the recipient of an Artist
Space Grant in 1986 and of two Nessa Cohen Grants (1982-1983)..
